Ultimate glossary of crypto currency terms, acronyms and abbreviations

I thought it would be really cool to have an ultimate guide for those new to crypto currencies and the terms used. I made this mostly for beginner’s and veterans alike. I’m not sure how much use you will get out of this. Stuff gets lost on Reddit quite easily so I hope this finds its way to you. Included in this list, I have included most of the terms used in crypto-communities. I have compiled this list from a multitude of sources. The list is in alphabetical order and may include some words/terms not exclusive to the crypto world but may be helpful regardless.
2FA
Two factor authentication. I highly advise that you use it.
51% Attack:
A situation where a single malicious individual or group gains control of more than half of a cryptocurrency network’s computing power. Theoretically, it could allow perpetrators to manipulate the system and spend the same coin multiple times, stop other users from completing blocks and make conflicting transactions to a chain that could harm the network.
Address (or Addy):
A unique string of numbers and letters (both upper and lower case) used to send, receive or store cryptocurrency on the network. It is also the public key in a pair of keys needed to sign a digital transaction. Addresses can be shared publicly as a text or in the form of a scannable QR code. They differ between cryptocurrencies. You can’t send Bitcoin to an Ethereum address, for example.
Altcoin (alternative coin): Any digital currency other than Bitcoin. These other currencies are alternatives to Bitcoin regarding features and functionalities (e.g. faster confirmation time, lower price, improved mining algorithm, higher total coin supply). There are hundreds of altcoins, including Ether, Ripple, Litecoin and many many others.
AIRDROP:
An event where the investors/participants are able to receive free tokens or coins into their digital wallet.
AML: Defines Anti-Money Laundering laws**.**
ARBITRAGE:
Getting risk-free profits by trading (simultaneous buying and selling of the cryptocurrency) on two different exchanges which have different prices for the same asset.
Ashdraked:
Being Ashdraked is essentially a more detailed version of being Zhoutonged. It is when you lose all of your invested capital, but you do so specifically by shorting Bitcoin. The expression “Ashdraked” comes from a story of a Romanian cryptocurrency investor who insisted upon shorting BTC, as he had done so successfully in the past. When the price of BTC rose from USD 300 to USD 500, the Romanian investor lost all of his money.
ATH (All Time High):
The highest price ever achieved by a cryptocurrency in its entire history. Alternatively, ATL is all time low
Bearish:
A tendency of prices to fall; a pessimistic expectation that the value of a coin is going to drop.
Bear trap:
A manipulation of a stock or commodity by investors.
Bitcoin:
The very first, and the highest ever valued, mass-market open source and decentralized cryptocurrency and digital payment system that runs on a worldwide peer to peer network. It operates independently of any centralized authorities
Bitconnect:
One of the biggest scams in the crypto world. it was made popular in the meme world by screaming idiot Carlos Matos, who infamously proclaimed," hey hey heeeey” and “what's a what's a what's up wasssssssssuuuuuuuuuuuuup, BitConneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeect!”. He is now in the mentally ill meme hall of fame.
Block:
A package of permanently recorded data about transactions occurring every time period (typically about 10 minutes) on the blockchain network. Once a record has been completed and verified, it goes into a blockchain and gives way to the next block. Each block also contains a complex mathematical puzzle with a unique answer, without which new blocks can’t be added to the chain.
Blockchain:
An unchangeable digital record of all transactions ever made in a particular cryptocurrency and shared across thousands of computers worldwide. It has no central authority governing it. Records, or blocks, are chained to each other using a cryptographic signature. They are stored publicly and chronologically, from the genesis block to the latest block, hence the term blockchain. Anyone can have access to the database and yet it remains incredibly difficult to hack.
Bullish:
A tendency of prices to rise; an optimistic expectation that a specific cryptocurrency will do well and its value is going to increase.

Instead of complaining about how moons ruined the sub, let's come together and make changes!!!

Like many of you, I have noticed the steady decline in post quality since MOONs became valuable. The old reposts, photoshopped or reposted artwork, the same meme templates, twitter spam, the same news articles being posted a dozen times, Bitcoin ATM pictures.. the list goes on.
But it doesn't have to be this way. As a community we are able to come together and use our MOONs to vote on changes to how distribution is handled or changes to the subs rules to limit certain types of content.
All the previous proposals have not passed because we did not have enough people with moon holdings who voted. We only had 345 people vote on it. This is less then 10% of the users who are online right now on cryptocurrency and 0.03% of the total subscribers. We need more people to participate in the community polls if we are ever going to make changes. We Need You more then ever to take part in MOON governance.
Just yesterday the Mods posted Community Proposals and Voting Guidelines. I'm sure if we all get together and come up with some positive ideas we can help limit the low quality content. If you have an idea, please submit a proposal to the moderators, so it can be put to voting.
Even simple things like restricting certain content to certain days may help, like Media Mondays etc. Any ideas that do not make changes to distribution will be much more likely to pass because the quorum is only 10% compared to 20% for a distribution change. If anyone has some good ideas please share them or submit a proposal, we can make a difference if we all put in the effort to make change.

This is a public service announcement to anyone who's foolish enough to still be using windows

This is a public service announcement to anyone who's foolish enough to still be using windows 10, windows 8, windows 7, vista, and also windows xp. your operating system is now fully compromised, and no, this isn't the same as indian scammers trying to hold your data hostage for google play cards or pictures of bobs and vagene or the cia backdooring your operating system so that they can spy on you it is far worse then that the international hacker known as 4chan has successfuly reverse engineered your operating system they know the sorce code, they've observed all of windows xp's vulnerabilities which means they know the vulnerabilities of all windows operating systems that have come after it because let's face it ever since windows xp all microsoft has really done is create some new themes for your desktop and add more spyware to windows and also forcefully push out updates, and things are about to get even worse, you thought viruses like wannacry caused a lot of damage? that's childsplay. the viruses of old were created by much less skilled hackers that didn't even have the source code of your operating system but now microsoft's spaghetti code is out in the open everybody can see it and your computer is more screwed then an unchaperoned toddler on epstein's island dring a bill clinton visit your kernel is going down faster then a golden retriever at the atf's headquarters. now before you go into full panic mode and start freaking out there are some solutions for you to continue using your computer, my personal recommendation is to load up dban, completely remove any trace of windows, or any other proprietary bullshit operating system that came with your computer, and then install gentoo and use that for the rest of eternity to do your computing. if you can't figure out how to use gentoo then you have the option of using linux mint which is another approved gnu/linux operating system that is more noob friendly and kind of similar to windows in the layout just minus all the horrible bullcrap and spaghetti code that makes up windows. if you can't figure out how to use linux mint then you should just sell your computer, purchase a horse and buggy, and go be amish in a field somewhere because it's no longer safe for you to have a computer or really any electronic device for that matter. hopefully the many years of you beating off to cam girls will translate into good butter churning skills so you can earn a living as an amish person. if you fail to comply you are going to get updates forcefully pushed to your operating system which has been happening for a while now because let's face it, microsoft has never even heard of the word consent, but instead of these updates coming from microsoft themself, bill gates himself, they are going to be coming from the hacker known as 4chan and you will soon experience strange behavior in your operating system, internet explorer or microsoft edge or whatever the hell they're calling that crap these days will be replaced with pale moon or a similar furry browser. every day the wallpaper on your desktop is going to become an anime girl that is more and more lewd and vaguely underage as time goes on all of your home videos will be replaced by forceful tentacle hentai, all of your family photos are going to be replaced with pepes that become more and more racist as time goes on, oh and also your webcam will permanently live stream to liveleak so watch out for chinese truck drivers and off-duty brazzilian police officers. now i don't want to hear any of you wondering all of a sudden oh woe is me why does something like this have to happen to me no you've been warned for years and years about the dangers of proprietary software and yet you did nothing, richard stallman went out of his way to make speeches at college campuses all across the world even doing some in spanish so that he can reach a wider audience and going days without a proper meal this man had to subsist on nutrients from the bottom of his foot and yet you did nothing, edward snowden revealed that bioluminescent goverment agents were living in your computer watching you watch cam girls and browse old memes that washed up on the shores of reddit all under the guise of stopping terrorism and had to flee the united states and go live in a russian airport bathroom and yet you continued using windows purchasing a new copy every few years making bill gates a gorillianare in the process so that he could get ot his end goal of injecting windows updates directly into the bloodstream of every person in the world and newborn babies and yet you kept on using windows even though each new version removed more and more of your rights and became more and more bloated but now 4chan, the hacker, has taken it to the extreme. you will no longer be using your operating system it will se you, it will require a minimum of 2 terabytes of ram and a quantum cpu just to load up the crypto miner that's going to be required to boot your operating system. now alternatively i have heard directly from the hacker known as 4chan that for one bitcoin you can purchase a subscription of windows xp yotsuba edition which will have most of the restrictions removed however your wallpaper will still be set to a lewd vaguely underage anime girl and your browser will be permanently set to 4channel.org, uh, also microsoft word is going to be replaced with vim so good luck doing your homework on there hopefully you know how to quit out of it. you have been warned now go install gentoo or suffer the consequences or like i said sell all your electronics and go be amish because the amish don't get computer viruses

DITO rockets up 20%, drops 30%, then finishes flat... the Aristocrats! (Wednesday, Oct 7)

Happy Wednesday, Barkada --

The PSE closed down 28 points to 5911 ▼0.5%.

Good news! I have a couple of people who are potentially interested in sponsoring MB, so I'm excited to explore those opportunities. My goal has always been to simply be revenue neutral, and to keep MB free for everyone to enjoy. (inb4 "RAID Shadow Legends" ad)
Shout-out to Christine for her suggestion to try and improve the bottom-line of MB by moving from Mailchimp to SendFox. It's something I'm going to look into, but I'm very careful about making changes. I'll have to investigate. Thanks also to Jack_ol_lantern for suggesting ways to leverage my domain to try a "roll your own" alternative, and to nikohd for suggesting I offer a bitcoin donation address.
I've got lots to study this weekend! No complaints here, though. Exciting times in MB town.

ATTENTION WINDOWS USERS, ITS TIME TO STOP!!

This is a public service announcement to anyone who is foolish enough to still be using Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista, and also Windows XP. Your operating system is now fully compromised and no, this isn't the same as Indian scammers trying to hold your data hostage for Google play cards or pictures of bobs and vagene or the CIA backdooring your operating system so that they can spy on you, it is far worse than that. But now 4chan the hacker has taken it to the extreme. You will no longer be using your operating system, it will use you. It will require a minimum of 2 terabytes of ram and a quantum CPU just to load up the crypto miner that's going to be required to boot your operating system. Now alternatively, I have heard directly from the hacker known as 4chan on that for one bitcoin you can purchase a subscription of Windows XP Yotsuba Edition, which will have most of the restrictions removed. However your wallpaper will still be set to a lewd vaguely under age anime girl and your browser's homepage will be permanently set to 4channel.org. Also Microsoft Word is going to be replaced with Vim, so good luck doing your homework on there, hopefully you know how to quit out of it. You have been warned. Now go install Gentoo or suffer the consequences. Or like I said, sell all of your electronics and go be Amish, because the Amish don't get computer viruses.

ATTENTION WINDOWS USERS, ITS TIME TO STOP!!

This is a public service announcement to anyone who is foolish enough to still be using Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista, and also Windows XP. Your operating system is now fully compromised. And no, this isn’t the same as Indian scammers trying to hold your data hostage for Google Play cards or pictures of bob and vagene, or the CIA backdooring your operating system so they can spy on you. It is far worse than that. The international hacker known as 4chan has successfully reverse-engineered your operating system. They know the source code. They have observed all of Windows XP’s vulnerabilities, which means they know the vulnerabilities of all Windows operating systems that have come after it because, let’s face it, ever since Windows XP, all Microsoft has really done is create some new themes for your desktop and add more spyware to Windows, and also forcefully push out updates. And things are about to get even worse. You though viruses like WannaCry caused a lot of damage? That’s child’s play. The viruses of old were created by much less skilled hackers that didn’t even have the source code of your operating system. But now, Microsoft’s spaghetti code is out in the open. Everybody can see it, and your computer is more screwed than an unchaperoned toddler on Epstein's island during a Bill Clinton visit. Your kernel is going down faster than a golden retriever at the ATF’s headquarters.
Now, before you go into full panic mode and start freaking out, there are some solutions for you to continue using your computer. My personal recommendation is to load up DBAN, completely remove any trace of Windows or any other proprietary bullshit operating system that came with your computer, and then install Gentoo. And use that for the rest of eternity to do your computing. If you can’t figure out how to use Gentoo, then you have the option of using Linux Mint, which is another approved GNU/Linux operating system that is more noob-friendly and kind of similar to Windows and its layout, just minus all the horrible bullcrap and spaghetti code that makes up Windows. If you can’t figure out how to install Linux Mint, then you should just sell your computer, purchase a horse and buggy, and go be Amish in a field somewhere because it’s no longer safe for you to have a computer or really any electronic device for that matter. Hopefully, the many years of you beating off to camgirls will translate into good butter-churning skills so that you can earn a living as an Amish person.
If you fail to comply, you are going to get updates forcefully pushed to your operating system, which has been happening for a while now, because let’s face it, Microsoft has never even heard of the word “consent.” But instead of these updates coming from Microsoft themselves—Bill Gates himself—they are going to be coming from the hacker known as 4chan, and you will soon experience strange behavior in your operating system. Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge, or whatever the hell they’re calling that crap these days, will be replaced with Pale Moon or a similar furry browser. Every day, the wallpaper on your desktop is going to become an anime girl that is more and more lewd and vaguely underage as time goes on. All of your home videos will be replaced by forceful tentacle hentai. All of your family photos are going to be replaced with Pepes that become more and more racist as time goes on. Oh, and also your webcam will permanently livestream to LiveLeak, so watch out for Chinese truck drivers and off-duty Brazilian police officers. Now, I don’t want to hear any of you wondering “Why is this happening all the sudden?”, “Oh, woe is me, why does something like this have to happen to me?” No. You’ve been warned for years and years about the dangers of proprietary software, and yet, you did nothing. Richard Stallman went out of his way to make speeches at college campuses all across the world, even doing some in Spanish so that he can reach a wider audience, and going days without a proper meal. This man had to subsist on nutrients from the bottom of his foot, and yet, you still did nothing. Edward Snowden revealed that bioluminescing government agents were living in your computer, watching you watch camgirls and browse old memes that washed up on the shores of Reddit, all under the guise of stopping terrorism. And he had to flee the United States and go live in a Russian airport bathroom, and yet, you continued on using Windows, purchasing a new copy every few years, making Bill Gates a gorrilianaire in the process, so that he can get to his end goal of injecting Windows updates directly into the bloodstream of every person in the world and newborn babies. And yet, you kept on using Windows, even though each new version removed even more of your rights and became more and more bloated.
But now, 4chan the hacker has taken it to the extreme. You will no longer be using your operating system. It will use you. Censorship in r/Cryptocurrency? due to bots Farming moons?

I might be just suspicious but I have noted my posts lately have only got a few upvotes, recently got the message from the anticenshorship bot “your post has been removed by one of the moderators”
Which would explain why lately most if my post don’t even see the light, I’m also guilty because I’ve posted more often than usual due to moons, I believe in the project they are already valuable to me despite the price, I like to post here since we are into cryptocurrency and interesting things are discussed
Nevertheless I try to post some quality, despite some memes I only post the ones that I think are very good and have a smart joke, not shitpost, what I don’t understand is how a post with a guy holding a tablet with a boner can get more upvotes! Haha
And of course the Twitter posts.... not even the new ones which I think they can be good but the ones that were posted YEARS ago, yeah we get it your bitcoins are more valuable that pizzas 🍕
I address this issue because I’ve seen people literally going from zero to have thousands of moons these months! obviously farming moons, I think they are bots, but the issue does this have been happening to most here???
I’ve seen more activity indeed, what I don’t would like is to Cryptocurrency to become another Steemit where people and mods post upvote and most importantly take down post for whatever reason but leave less quality post out there.

Roger Ver has contributed more to Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash than just about anybody

It is illuminating and saddening to see the same Core & BSV style tactics being used by top ABC supporters to defame one of the most noble and generous members of the community.
Here's one example:
https://twitter.com/micropresident/status/1296842510715609088 - http://archive.is/46xrH
This is probably just the start of the dirty smearing campaign against those who are against the tax. I warned about this 2 weeks ago, and preceeding this I believe I was the first to predict ABC would pull another IFP in November.
ABC is playing a game of mutually assured destruction, they are losing on every front. The strategy is to do as much damage as they can on the way down, "strong commitment". If this is anything like similar events: character assasinations, stalking behavior, mass reporting/censoring, lawsuits are all possible. It is really unfortunate.
This probably was predictable with the "miners are freeloaders" meme. Or that Bitcoin Cash business owners who do not fund ABC are "freeloaders". Well, good call Roger on not sponsoring them more, and thank you for dedicating so much of your life in your effort to spread p2p cash to the world.

What is the path of least resistance to create a small store that accepts crypto? (BTCPayServer woes)

I tried to set up a store for stickers and stuff like that over the weekend, that could accept Bitcoin. I thought BTCPay Server would be easy, but this was my experience:
1) I've heard BTCPay Jungle is easy and good, I go to their website and it is only configured for the site owner and no obvious way to create an account, I guess it shut down?
2) I head to the BTCPayServer docs to find other third party hosts and find this list. I try about five most have the same problem as #1. One does allow me to sign up but won't let me continue without verifying my email. Unfortunately they never send the email to confirm.
3) I try to set something up in Google Cloud with the docs which links to this Github README which has a broken link to a YouTube video. Also the instructions do not work after trying them as is.
Isn't this the project sponsored by Square? Am I an idiot that I can't get this to work or is it just broken? I'm willing to try again and even go so far as to set it up on my own Raspberry Pi but given the investment of money and time and my experience so far I don't want to do that only to find out it does not work.
TLDR: do you know how anyone has set up a store that accepts crypto and how did they do it? (I prefer to accept Bitcoin)
Thank you community for your memes and help. HODL and all that stuff.

WTF Happened in 1971?

In a recent spillover of internet-based long-form intellectual new media into the mainstream, Eric Weinstein appeared as a guest on Ted Cruz's podcast. Eric was well prepared. Cruz played the role of a charitable and engaged critic while avoiding direct confrontation.
The conservation laid bare the intersection of the anti-corporate socialist left and anti-government libertarian right and the potential of these forces as a combined political interest. There was a strong sense of shared acknowledgement of the current crisis and they touched on all the culture war aspects. But I'm more interested in what Eric has pointed to now several times as the root cause of the systemic decline, and what seems to be the original trigger for the slow decay and building of tension that has ultimately led to the rise of darker elements on both the left and right that we see today: a Great Decoupling of productivity (GDP) and wage growth in the early 1970's. The significance of this time period has also been highlighted by Eric's boss, Peter Thiel.
We are referred to https://wtfhappenedin1971.com/, where a collection of charts give the impression that a profound change in the foundations of the economy took place, effectively causing a divergence of all kinds of metrics related to equality, wealth creation, the complexity of regulation, and implicitly downstream effects like political polarization, incarceration rates, and age of marriage.
The simple, seemingly persuasive answer is that the effective cancellation of the gold standard set us on a path towards borrowing ever larger sums to avert financial crises as they arise, and the return to a currency backed by something provably scarce, i.e. bitcoin, is a solution.
I can't say I'm convinced it's that simple. And Eric doesn't mention currency specifically as the problem.
So what I want to know is, was 1971 a real inflection point, the real root of inequality and dysfunction we see today? Was the removal of limits on the Fed's ability to print money a mistake? Or was there some other government action or change at that time that was the real cause? Do we need to let stock market crashes happen from time to time?
A year ago, u/gwern posted a 1986 Atlantic article that described a lot of the problems in black America that are still around 4 decades later and offered more in the way of nuance and insight than most of the discourse we see today. What struck me on revisiting it was how the timing of the decline of Chicago aligns with the early 1970's trigger hypothesis:
In 1970 thirty-seven percent of the population of the area was below the poverty line; in 1980 the figure was 51 percent. In 1970 the unemployment rate was 9.5 percent; in 1980 it was 24.2 percent. In 1970 forty percent of the residents of the neighborhood lived in families with a female head; in 1980 the number had grown to 72 percent. In 1980 of the 54,000 residents 33,000 were on welfare. Experts agree that all of the numbers are even worse today.
My mental model for social issues is that they are mostly rooted in economics. If you have a society that generates wealth, you can pay teachers, doctors, and police well enough to attract competent candidates and the competition necessary to create real expertise. You can afford to build and maintain good infrastructure and spend time on figuring out how to best help the disadvantaged. You have the resources to advance technology and support the arts. You get all the positive feedback loops that come with this.
When wealth generation becomes concentrated and restricted, public institutions start to struggle, people feel they have less opportunity, and social issues start to bubble up like the formation of outgroups of all kinds. A massive oversimplifation, I know, but a useful general framework to approaching issues that avoids (mis)placing blame on cultural degeneracy, "evil" corporations, or other common scapegoats that are largely symptoms of greater problems.
Today, this mindset seems to align with the conservative right, but in the 1986 article it's the "liberal answer" to the problem of ghettos that I identify with:
In Chicago the harbinger of the change was the closing in the late fifties of the stockyards, which for half a century were the sine qua non of lower-class grunt work and a heavy employer of blacks. Chicago lost 200,000 jobs in the seventies; small shut-down redbrick factories that used to make products like boxes and ball bearings dot the city, especially the West Side. The lack of jobs, the argument continues, caused young men in the ghetto to adopt a drifting, inconstant life; to turn to crime; to engage in exaggeratedly macho behavior -- acting tough, not studying, bullying women for money -- as a way to get the sense of male strength that their fathers had derived from working and supporting families. As Murray believes that one simple step, ending all welfare programs, would heal the ghettos, the unemployment school believes that another simple step, jobs, would heal them. "When there's a demand for the participation of the black underclass in the labor force, most of the so-called problems people talk about will evaporate in a generation," says John McKnight. an urban-research professor at Northwestern University.
Indeed, Mr. McKnight. And up until this spring, it looked like the Trump presidency's aggressively pro-jobs and pro-American workers policy was showing promise of vindicating this view - the presence of BLM and racial tensions leading up to 2016 had all but subsided by 2018-2019. I wonder just how little backlash the George Floyd incident would have caused if the pandemic hadn't undone the economic progress of the past 3 years.
Mind you, that "progress" was but a tiny step in the right direction in terms of improving wages and opportunities for the lowest earners. And for all the times the "audit the fed" meme hit the top of the_donald, it now seems impossible that the current administration has any capability or willingness to take the drastic steps needed to address the real root cause that apparently started 50 years ago. To do that, we may need an actual revolution.

r/cc mods have to distinguish posts between random meme and valuable infographics ad bot count it to both media posts

Sometimes when I try to post some valuable infographics here like "where freshly mined bitcoins heading to" the bot just count it's as a low-quality media post that is limited to only 4 in the top 25 posts even I put a flare of metrics over it, but still it got deleted.
I respect why mod did that to just limit low-quality memes in this sub but because of this, the high-quality posts getting deleted.
What if mods just change post-policy according to flare we use that only 4 comedy posts are allowed in top 25 and 4 metrics posts are allowed in top 25 etc..
Will it be good or bad for this sub I am not sure kindly enlighten me

For anyone who is at all informed about wallets and exchanges, especially their fee structures or how exchange rates work, I have a short story, followed by a question, and I would greatly appreciate your insight and advice.

Heavily-edited Xpost from cryptocurrency after reading a very enlightening post regarding meme spam and moon harvesting...what on earth is wrong with people...?
First off, super quick, can anyone steer me toward a cryptocurrency converter that takes timestamps into consideration? I need a conversion tool that I can plug dates and times into that can tell me how much the contents of my wallet was on a given day and time. Or how much a transaction was worth at the time that it was sent. These must exist, and yes, I've Googled for them, but I never find exactly what I'm looking for. I figured Reddit probably knows, because collectively, Reddit knows pretty much everything. 😁😁
Okay so, story:
I sent a friend 11.88 XMR this morning through an exchange service that claims to not cost anything to send to other users within the service. He only received 11.55. We didn't notice it at first, and he proceeded to forward that money on to a third party who informed him he was short, as she had only received 11.24 xmr and change.
I'm sure you're all aware of this, but Monero's value has increased by like $25 just this weekend. Cool, right?
Sure it is, but not at all the point, which is that 11.88 XMR (at the time I found out that what I sent wasn't what got received and went looking through my transactions and thought to plug numbers into a converter and see how much we lost) was roughly $1,582. But 11.55 xmr was only $1,538. And 11.24 was only $1,497.
So to transfer coin from point A to point C, all within a service which is supposedly free to send within that service, ended up costing us like $85 somehow? And legit, guys, I'm not sure how or why.... (Hence the need for a converter that allows for timestamps. When I complain about my missing money, it would be good to have accurate exchange rates available.)
So once I realized that, I went looking through my transaction history. There's similar discrepancies relating to actual coin exchanges also, where I've traded Bitcoin for Monero or vice versa, but the value of what I traded is greater than the value of what I traded it for. By quite a bit.
This morning, for instance, I had 0.14196176 Bitcoin (worth $1,641 when I looked it up later) that I exchanged for 11.8424500192 Monero (worth $1,566). So like...where the hell is the other $75?
Again, this service advertises the lack of hidden fees and the free exchange of coins. Transaction fees are minimal, like 0.005 or something. Withdrawl fees also. I use it for the exact reason that one of the third party exchange services that Edge wallet uses cost me like $50 the one time that I used it, and the chunk of money being exchanged was way more than this was today. But what Really aggravates me about the situation is that I'm a donor to this service for the express reason that they've (supposedly) saved me so much money and so many headaches, while maintaining a (Supposedly) free service in the interest of preserving users' privacy. I'm pretty fucking outraged about it honestly, but I'm trying to maintain some semblance of composure because....
I'm aware that I don't know what I don't know. And I don't have all that much experience with/various exchanges. For all I know, there is a standard deduction I should have been aware of all this time that I just didn't know about. Or I should but don't know that there's typically a loss of ×% when trading one coin for another. Or...something, you know? So I don't want to rant and rave about shitty business practices and them effectively misleading their users and stealing our money if what's actually happening is that I just don't know what the hell is going on or how anything works, if that makes sense.
I have a (polite) email drafted to the support staff of the service requesting some clarification regarding their fee structure, as well as an explanation for their having marketed themselves as offering such a service for their users and claiming not to charge us for it but then apparently doing exactly that.
Before I send it though, I thought it might be wise to consult others who have more experience than I with exchanges and wallet services. I was hoping that someone much more experienced with and educated on cryptocurrencies/wallets/exchanges/etc might be able to give me a crash course on why I lost $160 by using a service for it's intended purpose, and who I need to bitch at to get it back. (I'm just kidding. I'm perfectly aware that it's never getting refunded. Because why would it?)
So my question is: What don't I know?
Basically any information or considerations at all that I should be aware of or just insights that might be in any way helpful would be really appreciated. And not that I expect any, but I wouldn't turn down any tips y'all might wanna share regarding how I might quickly earn back the money we lost, since now we're short lol. (Lost? Spent? I'm not sure how to classify that in my head....)
Thanks guys!

How to Convert Reddit MOONS to Dai (and then Ethereum, Bitcoin, fiat etc)

There are already good resources out there such as:
https://medium.com/dappworks/full-guide-convert-reddits-moon-cryptocurrency-into-e349ec1992d0#:~:text=Click%20on%20arrow%20button%20in,Click%20%E2%80%9CSEND%20MOONS%E2%80%9D
Hopefully, the guide below can help fill in any blanks or give you an alternate route. Please note this is a long and fairly complex process and runs the risk of loosing MOONs and small amounts of Ethereum and Dai which are used in the transfer process. I take no responsibility for individuals using this guide and it is up to you to research other resources and do your due diligence.

  1. Post engaging content, comments or memes...
  2. Hope that you get upvotes
  3. The more upvotes you get, the more MOONS (a cryptocurrency token) at the end of the month you get
  4. These MOONS are tokens on the Rinkeby Test Network, not the main Ethereum blockchain
  5. Now time to convert these MOONS to Ethereum, Bitcoin, fiat etc
  6. Please note that I am not responsible for any loss of funds beyond this point to proceed with caution!!!
  7. You will want to link your reddit MOONS account to a Metamask account
  8. Download Metamask if you haven't already (it's a Chrome app)
  9. Find out the seed phrase for your Reddit Moons Wallet (don't share this with anyone and keep it safe!). Do this by opening the reddit app and clicking on 'Vault' on the left hand menu
  10. Then click the three little dots next to Vault (at the top)
  11. Now click Recovery Phrase
  12. Write this down with pen and paper
  13. Now open Metamask and import your seed phrase to link the account (Note that your MOONS will probably not appear yet, will get to that later)
  14. Next up we are going to want to go to the exchange where we can swap our MOON tokens for Eth (although it is not as straightforward a process as you might think)
  15. https://xmoon.exchange/
  16. You will see that this exchange has three sections. The first allows us to exchange MOONS (on the Rinkeby blockchain) to XMOONS (on the XDai blockchain, where Gas fees are paid in XDai rather than Eth). The second section allows us to exchange XMOONS for XDai. The third section allows us to exchange XDai for good old fashioned Ethereum (on the actual Ethereum blockchain).
  17. Before we get started with any exchanging, we need to configure metamask a bit.
  18. First up we are going to make Metamask show the MOONS that we have. To do this, change the network from 'Main Ethereum Network' to 'Rinkeby Test Network' at the top dropdown menu. Now click 'Add Token' and custom token. Now input the following:
  19. Token contract address: 0xDF82c9014F127243CE1305DFE54151647d74B27A
  20. Click next once
  21. Now click back (weird I know)
  22. In the decimals of precision enter 18
  23. You should now be able to see the correct number of MOONS and this should match the amount you saw on your vault in Reddit
  24. In preparation for later we are also going to want to add the xDai network to our metamask
  25. To do this click on that drop down at the top of top of metamask again and click Custom RPC
  26. Now enter exactly what is shown here https://www.xdaichain.com/for-users/wallets/metamask/metamask-setup
  27. Still with me? Now we are going to get to exchanging
  28. Switch metamask back to Rinkeby Test Network and on xmoon.exchange click 'connect' and follow the instructions shown on metamask
  29. We are also going to need some Rinkeby Ethereum (don't worry it's free since its just a test network, go to https://faucet.rinkeby.io/ to get some (don't need much)
  30. Now click MOON to xMOON and convert the amount you want to!
  31. This process can take quite a while (took me 30 mins) so grab a coffee
  32. To check if you have xMOONs now, change your metamask over to xDai network
  33. They should appear on the xmoon.exchange site
  34. Next we want to convert these xMoon's into xDai, however, we have to have some xDai in there in the first place to pay for the gas (remember that this xDai blockchain uses xDai to pay for gas not Eth!). To do this, buy some Dai (20 USD should do) in your favourite way (normal exchange, DeFi, etc.) and transfer it to your Metamask account Eth account (ON THE MAIN ETHEREUM BLOCKCHAIN, DON'T USE RINKEBY!). Also transfer around 10 USD worth of Eth to your metamask to cover any gas fees on the Main Ethereum Blockchain side of things.
  35. Great, now while keeping Metamask on the Main Ethereum Blockchain, click DAI to xDAI and convert around10-20 USD.
  36. Once this xDai has shown up (again could take a while), switch metamask back over to xDai blockchain and click xMOON to xDai (this should be fairly quick)
  37. Now click xDai to Dai (might take a while again, don't panic like I did!)
  38. You should now have Dai on the Ethereum blockchain held in your metamask (which you can see once you switch metamask back over to Main Ethereum)
  39. Feel free now to do with the Dai whatever you wish! Send to an exchange and swap to BTC or Eth, keep a hold of in metamask etc etc

Please feel free to offer comments and corrections in the comments :)

Edit 1: Typo fix!

Bitcoin's next 15 years : Year 2020–2035

2020 4Q

~ More companies follow in Microstrategy’s footsteps. Rumors of more corporate treasurers investing in BTC in boardrooms globally. A few listed large corporates announce accumulation of BTC after their buddies have all bought in (Board members, C-suite executives, family, and friends, etc.)
~ Money printing does not stop as the deflationary force of technology is too severe; the new US government formed after Biden’s win begins to adopt MMT as its primary guidance of future economic theory, led by Steph Kelton.
~ The holiday season and strong seasonality pump BTC back to $20k for the first time. Hard rejection and price fall back to $14k.

2021

~ BTC finally breaks $20k after multiple retests of overhead resistance sometime in spring
~ Almost weekly we see another corporation announcing vested interest in BTC
~ No longer in doubt that the asset class is in a bull market. Macro funds pile in. By year-end, we’re at $55k. Newspaper reports Bitcoin has now broken the $1 trillion mark. Most institutions begin scrambling to understand the asset class and set up “Digital Asset Investment teams”
~ Retail money flows to altcoins; Bitcoin is becoming too expensive for “retail” investors. The bitcoin community discusses possibly denoting BTC as sats, but majority of exchanges not interested as they derive most income from alt flows. However, most Bitcoin-only platforms switch to sats as the primary display format led by bitcoiners who now have considerable wealth and influence
~ Increasing talk that some smaller nations are now discussing the prospect of including Bitcoin on their central bank balance sheet
~ The first BTC-denominated corporate bond is launched

2022

~ Those in power have established full BTC positions, and we begin to see subtle clues that some countries are possibly accumulating BTC
~ Private banks selling BTC structured products now out in full force; custody solutions are now institutional-grade. 50% of the world’s banks have some product/solution tailored around bitcoin. The other 50% scramble.
~ Marks the top as BTC momentarily exceeds the most valuable company by market cap (~$2.5 trillion in 2022 @ $130K price). The final days of the frenzy are filled with rumors that central banks have accumulated 10% of global supply, and that it may even form part of the IMF’s global recognized reserve currencies. Crypto Twitter reaches peak “I told you so”

2023

~ The next bear market isn’t as severe as the last few; as the digital asset teams of various institutions are accumulating up to 2-5% of their AuM. It’s now commonly accepted that this asset class is here to stay and that even deploying $10 billion is no longer an issue in an asset class worth an aggregate $5 trillion.
~ BTC finds a floor 60% lower at $50K as smart money accumulates. CT screams for a 80% correction because mUh bItCoIn cYcLeS aNd fRaCtAls
~ Investment banks now have full-fledged research teams dedicated to digital assets. Calls for 80% correction too, so the smart money front-runs.
~ The middle class latches on to the wholecoining meme. “1 Bitcoin to secure a retirement; stack those sats”
~ The wealthy who are now increasingly composed of inherited wealth begin selling real estate/equities/bonds for Bitcoin but holds their BTC with their private bank. Realizing that Bitcoin supply is truly limited and sensing the “1 bitcoin to retire” meme; and that not every millionaire can own 1 bitcoin, many of the rich/ultra-rich scramble to buy 5–100 BTC each if only to cement their status as rich. 5–100 BTC costs $500K-10M (at $100k per BTC)
~ The winning product of the year is an automatic savings plan in bitcoin.

2025

~ Bitcoin is back to trading near its all-time highs of $130K after the 2024 halving cycle, however, the effect is marginal but the markets wrongly attribute it to the halving supply squeeze, building a false narrative for the next cycle in 2028.
~ Institutional money now in full-play; on hindsight we’ll realize the 10-year steady bull-run has actually begun since last year in 2023, similar to the gold bull run from 2000 to 2011
~ More exchanges finally denominate BTC in sats. $100K BTC = 0.1 cent per sat. Logging into platform displays your stack as:
“11.7m satoshis ≈ $17,500”

2028

~ Retail attempts to trade around the 2028 halving cycle. The halving cycle no longer have much of an impact, as demand now far outstrips supply changes
~ Many earlycoiners now sell between $200–400K, only to see it continue its relentless climb at a 30% annual rate
~ The first central bank announces the official addition to their balance sheets; all other central bank begins to FOMO. Cements BTC as a global reserve asset.
~ Governments ask that private ownership of bitcoin be transferred to regulated financial institutions such as their local bank where it will be held under custody. 70% of people do so.

2033

~ Many of the early-coiners now buyback at near to $1M ($20 trillion market cap), finally equaling gold’s market cap at a price of $4000+
~ Bitcoin peaks and meanders under $1M for the next decade
~ Volatility is now <10% per year, merchants begin adopting it en-masse as a medium of exchange

2035

~ 5 years of price stability leads to some merchants re-pricing certain goods in sat-terms
~ The lightning network crosses a billion channels created
~ Fiat does not go away, but most G20 countries decide to ban bitcoin as a medium of exchange for economic transactions. Ownership of bitcoin as an asset is encouraged as a store of wealth; private ownership is frowned upon and in some cases made illegal.

Hey reddit! Today we are doing a verified AMA about the Bitcoin Halving at r/IAmA. To celebrate the Halving we are giving away 2 prizes of Half a Bitcoin each.

Hello Bitcoin!
The AMA may be over, but the contest for the free Bitcoin is not!
Hi all, my name is Rahul Sood, I am the creator of Microsoft Ventures and co-founder of Unikrn Esports.
I'm helping my friends at Bittrex and Bittrex Global celebrate the Bitcoin Halving. They are giving away half of a Bitcoin to two lucky people (half to someone inside the USA, and the other half to someone outside the USA) after the Halvening!
For one entry all you have to do is submit a reply on this thread that answers two questions;
  1. Why do you love Bitcoin? (memes are welcome)
  2. What do you plan to do with your half Bitcoin if you win this contest?
There is also an opportunity to get more entries at the full contest page, I highly encourage you to read the details - dates/times/etc are there.
Keep in mind we’ll be making the draw shortly after the halving and the Bitcoin will be transferred to your Bittrex account or Bittrex Global account, good luck!
